Hello,

I’m Lewis, a freelance photographer from County Durham in the North East of England.

I suppose the easiest place to start is with how all of this began. I picked up a camera for the first time in May 2023, when I went to London to witness the Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla. I never really expected that day to lead anywhere in particular, but I came home knowing I wanted to keep doing it. Since then, I’ve rarely been without a camera.

My early work naturally centred around the Royal Family and the traditions and occasions that surround them. I’ve always had a fascination with the monarchy, history and the character of Britain, so being able to photograph those things was a pretty perfect place to start.

Since then, I’ve been fortunate enough to photograph some remarkable occasions. One of the things I’m proudest of is being able to photograph numerous Royal events from the Queen Victoria Memorial in London, looking directly across towards Buckingham Palace. I’ve covered the State Opening of Parliament, Trooping the Colour, Garter Day, the Braemar Gathering and other Royal and ceremonial occasions across the country.

But over time, photography has become much more than just Royal events for me.

I’ve had the opportunity to work alongside organisations such as the Duchy of Lancaster and the County Durham Lieutenancy, as well as photographing people, businesses, events and places across the North East and further afield. I’ve found that what I enjoy most is not necessarily what is happening in front of the camera, but the opportunity to tell a story about it.

That might be a major public occasion with thousands of people watching, a portrait of someone in their own surroundings, an event for an organisation, or simply a photograph of a place or a person that deserves to be remembered. I like photographs that feel honest and have a reason for being there.

Along the way, my photographs have appeared in The Times, The Telegraph, People Magazine and Majesty Magazine, alongside being used by organisations and clients for editorial, publicity and archival purposes. Every opportunity has been a reminder of just how many different directions photography can take you.

And, perhaps unusually, I’m writing all of this at 18. I’m still learning, still experimenting and still figuring out exactly where I want photography to take me. That is part of what I enjoy about it. There is always another person to meet, another place to see and another story to photograph.

I’m continuing to build my work across editorial, portrait, event and commissioned photography. Royal photography will always be an important part of what I do, it is where this all began. I want to photograph interesting people, important occasions, great places and the everyday things that tell us something about Britain and the people who live here.

I’m still based in County Durham, although the camera has a habit of taking me all over the country. Wherever I’m working, I try to keep things simple: be observant, be professional, get on with people and make photographs that are worth keeping.

It’s funny to think that picking up a camera at the Coronation in 2023 would lead to all of this. I’m still only at the beginning, and I’m rather looking forward to seeing where it goes next.
